How to Dazzle Your Wedding Guests Well Before the Big Day

Not to delve too far into my personal life, but I just became someone’s wife. Pretty big news, right? With years of experience in wedding and event planning, I couldn’t wait to utilize all that I learned to orchestrate my own big day…but in a slightly different way than you might expect.

We eloped!! Yes, you read that correctly. After seeing so many huge, beautiful bashes all I wanted was a stress-free day packed with as much genuine romance as we could manage. While we were away, we sent out lovely printed invitations to announce the news and to invite our friends and family to attend a proper party upon our arrival back home. The trouble with invitations is that you can only fit so much information into a 4×6 space, so we did what any tech-savvy couple would do- we designed a wedding website.

We were astounded by the reaction from our guests! Our wedding website has gotten more compliments than any other singular element to date. People love reading the story of our engagement and how we met from an almost journalistic point-of-view. For many large weddings, guests may be in attendance who haven’t had the opportunity to get to know both the bride and groom on a personal level. Attention-grabbing, thoughtfully written wedding websites can give attendees a very clear sense of the couple well before the big day, and add an extra, unexpected layer to the celebration.

Looking for a unique wedding idea? Don’t just set up a boring wedding website! Set up a website that will impress your guests and make a statement about you as a couple.

Here are some pointers for a wedding website that will dazzle your guests:

1. Set up a unique URL. Splurge on a personal domain name that says something about you as a couple. We chose, but something as simple as will do the trick. Just make sure the domain isn’t already registered! Websites like allow you to set up a free wedding website, and, for an additional $19.99, you can customize your site with a unique URL.

2. Don’t be camera shy! This is the perfect time to show off your engagement photos! Or…if you have lots of great photos that you’ve taken over the years, set up a visual storyboard. Photos add personality and loads of color to your website especially if you are using a basic template. Pay special attention to the photo you use for the homepage- it’s the first impression you’ll make besides the actual invitation!

3. Killer content is key. Whether you hire a professional writer or add the task to your ever-expanding DIY to-do list, make sure that it’s carefully crafted, that it’s checked and double checked for grammatical errors, and that it truly tells the story of your life and love. Who isn’t a sucker for a good love story? Use your website to not only tell your story, but also to provide pertinent bits of information- where to check out while they’re in your city or town, the best places to park, hotel details, what to wear!
